A doctorate in the field of music theatre at the University of Bayreuth is characterized by being closely involved in the project work of the Forschungsinstitut für Musiktheater der Universität Bayreuth (fimt). The library and the archive at the location of the institute in Thurnau offer ideal opportunities for working intensively and without interruption. In addition, the fimt enables a lively exchange with national and international representatives of music theatre research. Visiting regular colloquia as well as the active involvement in conferences and workshops support the first steps into research. An overview of current and completed doctoral theses can be found here.
The doctorate is usually completed after 3 years with a doctor in philosophy.
Required is a master’s, Magister’s, diploma’s or state examination degree (university, art school or music conservatoire) with an overall grade of at least 2 (law: 3).
Besides the application form and a CV containing a passport-size photo, a Graduate Prospectus (synopsis of a doctoral project), which has been evaluated positively by two professors involved in the doctoral programme, has to be submitted.
Application deadline is 15 July of every year.
